How Vacuum Sealing works

Vacuum sealers are great for storing and protecting food. How do they work, however? Well, you’re about to; find out. Here, we’ll go over the process of vacuum sealers, including how they work, and the process surrounding them. 

The Types 

Before you understand how they’re able to work, let’s look at the types that are there, and how they work. 

There are edge vacuum sealers, which a lot of people know about, because they’re commonly used by people trying to save meals. They have a lid that directly closes over the part that opens within the vacuum bag, once you line this against the sealer. They also have compressors built in, which is great for discussing the way sealers work. They do require a channeled vacuum bag, which allows for the airflow to flow out of these bags than smooth vacuum bags do. 

The nozzle vacuum bag is literally a nozzle that’s inserted within this, and then, it removes the air.  They have a nozzle that’s retractable for when it’s over.  This is one that’s popular for commercial use, and usually features a pump that creates a vacuum, or an air compressor that’s external, in order to create this.  They also can create a gas flush cycle, which is great for mudded atmosphere packaging. Because of the suctioning nature of this, a lot of products with too much liquid aren’t recommended when you’re using this. 

Finally, you’ve got the chamber vacuum sealers, which create a vacuum within this, and it pushes the air out of the bag.  This is larger than a lot of edge sealers and is found in a lot of commercialized settings because of the cost of it. 

A digital control setting allows for users to put the desired amount of air removal in place. They’re great for products with a lot of liquid, or if they’re completely liquid themselves. 

How they Work 

Here, we’ll go over the basic process of how they work. 

  • First a user fills this bag with what they want to vacuum the packaging 
  • Once this sealer lid is opened up, and the open ended part of the bag is placed on this sealer. 
  • It’s then lined up, and the lid for the sealer is closed and then pushed down. 
  • The vacuum that’s there takes the air from the bag. 
  • Once this is done, the sealer then closes up, and then fixes the bag, creating a seal that’s there 
  • An indicator or light will tell the person using this when they’re done 
  • Once this is finished the button is pressed to release this vacuum, opening up the lid 

Many edge vacuum sealers also have a little liquid reservoir within this, and also some gaskets which form a more airtight sort of closure. Once this lid is closed up, the vacuum then begins to remove the air from this bag.

Edge vacuum sealers are considered the best for those starting with vacuum sealer packaging. This is because the reservoir for liquid is great, especially for catching the juices that might fall when you’re trying to vacuum the bags. They’re small, light in weight, and best for use in the home. They’re also very easy for one to clean when they’re not being used.

When stuff goes wrong, usually the sealing wires do burn, similar to how lightbulb filaments do.. There is also the tape that does start to wear down. When you replace it as it wears out, it can keep the vacuum sealer for much longer and for more uses.

Also of note, you also will be better in terms of protection in a poly mailer due to the fact that they’re water resistant, unlike a box, so keep that in mind. 

Less space 

They also take up far less space in a vehicle, but you also want to look at the materials used in packaging. When you’ve got a box, you need to sometimes keep it upright, instead of flat. All poly mailers are flat, so they take up far less room. Not to mention, the materials to seal are also better too. You can even get sealing mailers that are cheaper too! 

Better for the environment 

Finally, they are better  at environmental impact. One problem with poly mailer bags is the fact that they’re made from plastic, and thereby oil, and this is something that can be a problem if you get the wrong ones. 

Corrugated boxes are made from a renewable resource, a tree, and with proper management, can be better.

While both are made via recycled types of materials and both can be recycled in most cases, a lot of people struggle to recycle corrugated products, so in a lot of cases, it can be better in the long haul to get poly bags.

Shrink wrapping for Ecommerce

Selling different products on Etsy, eBay, Amazon, or even on various websites is great for building a business and can be lucrative. If you like to make your own, or even just be a product reseller, you can now list different products you sell, and the sales will roll in with determination, and working hard. 

While sales are gotten, some other owners might consider different types of packaging for products.  This consideration is something that comes from want, or necessity. Some owners also find that the products they sell eventually get messed up during the transit process, while there are others that want to offer better, professional packaging.

Shrink wrapping is a solution for a lot of packaging problems, and this is something that offers a lot of benefits, and uses for different sales, and also the benefits that provide a wealth of different needs for people in the packaging sphere. 

Remember, this is different from vacuum and stretch film packaging, but shrink wrapping involves putting heat on something so that it shrinks and fits the product that’s wrapped. This is recognized in a lot of instances, and one good example is the film that’s surrounding cases of water bottles. 

Types 

There are different kinds of shrink film, but usually they’re made up of four different materials. They’re usually bought in single wound, or center folded types of rolls.  Single wound types come off in a flat type, and usually, they’re folded in a half sort of way lengthwise. 

Shrink bags are another that’s commonly used within shrink film wrapping and come in a variety of various sizes. Shrink tubing is probably the most common type of shrink wrapping that happens, and they usually come in flat rolls that lay in a flat manner.

Another common one is PVC shrink wrapping, and this is like cellophane wrapping. It’s crinkly because it shrink, and then, when the heat is put on there, it’s much more rigid. 

Polyolefin is definitely becoming a more common type that’s used within this due to the softer nature, and the PVC elasticity, while also being approved by the FDA for contact with food and the like. 

What you Need 

So you want to start shrink wrapping your products? 

Well, here’s what you need to make it work. 

First, you need a heat sealer, which comes in a variety of different styles, sizes, and different specifications based on the production levels and the sizes of the product.

Your most basic is going to be called impulse sealers, with a singular sealing bar that seals, and then closes the open ends. They’re purchased for less than 100 bucks and can be up to 400 bucks depending on the different sizes.

You can also get a high output production one called an L bar. These are more expensive, but they’re good with a centerfold type of shrink film, as they offer a lot of efficiency.  While more expensive, it’s important to consider these.

Second thing you need is a heating element.  You can get a heat gun, and usually, they’re good for smaller outputs of these shrink wrapped products, and for starting out with shrink wrapping. 

If you have a lot of products, then you can buy a shrink tunnel, which is like a giant oven.  The product goes in with the conveyor belt, it shrinks down, and then, the product comes out.

These can be very expensive, but if you have a ton of products, it’s much more efficient than other types of shrink wrapping items and elements in order to seal the product effectively.

How to Stop Freezer Burn

Foods are one of the main things that do break down as time goes on. Without the proper use of food preservation, many of these foods spoil within a couple of days. The storage of foods in the freezer does extend the life of the food, but there is a drawback to this: freezer burns. 

How can you prevent this? Well, one way for you to prevent this is by reducing the exposure of air.  Vacuum packaging is one way to get rid of air, eliminating freezer burn in a lot of cases. While it’s not harmful, it ruins the quality of the food.  This is caused by the lost moisture that happens when you leave something in the freezer too long, and then, it’s frozen on the product surface, and is easily seen when it happens. 

The vacuum packaging is a type of modified sort of space for this packaging. Oxygen is something that’s vacuumed from this package, and it moves the air that’s within these. Once the oxygen gets taken out, a seal that’s airtight is made so that it prevents the air from coming in. This reduction of your oxygen and the amount that there is what keeps the food storage longer and keeps the taste nice and preserved. 

The storage of this without your vacuum packaging will still keep it long, but the vacuum packaging actually prevents microorganisms from growing, so it takes out the spoilage aspects in most cases.  When it’s below 40 degrees in storage, the bacteria growth slows, so it’s much easier for you to keep this going.

Vacuum packaging that works with the storage of items in the freezer also will keep the food for years in some cases, or at least a lot of months. These frozen aspects also do provide protection from the different microorganisms that are there, while still being sealed so much that you don’t have to worry about quality being ruined. 

Here is a list of products that you can do vacuum packaging in the freezer with: 

  • Poultry: done with a film that’s thicker in order to provide a lot of protection 
  • Pork: if you have cuts that are greater than six mils, these larger cuts also are better with a vacuum seal with heavier film in order to protect these edges that are sharp. 
  • Red meats: done in order to prevent inert gas from getting in, reducing discoloration 
  • Fish: cut into 3 mil bags mostly 
  • Deli meats: the bulk is usually vacuum sealed with form fitting seal machines 
  • Pasta: yes, you can take pasta that’s dried out, and also take out the rest of the moisture that might be there, and it prevents the leftovers from getting freezer burn. 
  • Baked items: some baked items are great for vacuum packaging and storage in the freezer.  Anything that does need to breathe however shouldn’t use this 
  • Spices and dried seasonings: this is good for taking out the rest of the moisture that’s sitting in there, similar to how pasta is.  It’s great for long term storage of items in the freezer 
  • Stews and soups: ideal for the packaging of liquids, and using this chamber also prevents the freezer burn from setting in. 
  • Powdered items: this can be done with vacuum chambers, and it is lodged directly into nozzle types of sealers, unless you use a filter 

The only items that really can’t be done with vacuum storage are those that do need to “breathe” so most veggies and fruit might not work, as they may need testing before you do it.
